Organ Festival Holland
Organ Festival Holland looks beyond Alkmaar
Saturday afternoon 10th of June Organ Festival Holland presents three concerts on organs in the city of Hoorn. After the prologue on physical discomfort in days gone by and the lengthy first round of the competition - six candidates will be greatly relieved - it is time to be diverted by a musical outing to this historical seaport. The winner of the International Schnitger Competition of 2015 Adriaan Hoek and the city-organist in Hoorn Mark Heerink, will take you to three exceptional locations with fascinating organs.
Adriaan Hoek kicks off with a short performance in the Oosterkerk, close to the old port. This church has an instrument by 19th century organbuilder Christiaan Witte, for which he used the existing old case from 1764,: you will hear something completely different from what you see (Sound Visions!). Work by Johannes Brahms and Max Reger will come into its own here.
At the other end of the historical centre we find the Lutheran Church with a charming organ by Pieter Müller, a very well preserved 18th century instrument, where Adriaan’s programme will include the elegant music of Joseph Haydn and Carl Philip Emanuel Bach: a delicate intermezzo.
In the Koepelkerk, a cruciform basilica from 1882 by architect A.C. Bleijs, Mark Heerink will take us to the world of Dutch composers such as Albert de Klerk, Daan Manneke, Herman Strategier and Jan Raas. It is bound to be a very special experience to hear this on the restored and reconstructed Maarschalkerweerd-organ from 1883.
Saturday afternoon 10 June 2017 from 2 – 6 p.m.
Tickets can be ordered through our website.
Special privileges for Academy participants
All festival activities are free of charge for the participants of the International Organ Academy. Therefore the excursion to Hoorn is one of those events you need not miss. But of course all the concerts and the competition finals are also inspiring experiences.
It’s all in the detail: remarkable people behind the festival
It is no secret: without financial support Organ Festival Holland couldn’t exist. But the unconditional commitment of a lot of people, some volunteers, some against compensation, is also indispensable. What about the beautiful flower arrangements in the church every festival and the wonderful bouquets that are handed out? This year Acanthus Bloemen has taken up this task. We are convinced the flowers will once again contribute to the festive and inspiring character of the festival and now you know who is responsible.
No less than four concerts will be introduced by two inspiring speakers: Chris Bragg and Hans Visser. They will examine the background of the music, the players and the instruments. Do go and listen to them and enjoy the wonderful concerts with even more intensity. The introductions are held in the library (Bibliotheek Kennemerwaard), especially open for the occasion, across the road from the church. Again an excellent example of collaboration free of charge.
Finalists from 2015 on Brava TV
It has been said before: Organ Festival Holland wants to move with the times by employing various forms of media. In 2015 the final round was entirely taped on video. Because of this the three finalists, Megumi Hamaya, Manuel Shuen and Adriaan Hoek can still be admired on our film album. But there is more. StingrayBravaTV will broadcast these recordings before and during the coming festival. for Ziggo-subscribers on Channel 607. Broadcasting dates and times you can find HERE. Allow yourself to be inspired and come to Alkmaar’s loveliest festival.
Picture Music, the latest news.
Those who carefully look at and listen to the large organ in the Grote Sint Laurenskerk, get to absorb many impressions. The magnificent organ doors painted with glorious scenes and the versatile richness in timbre of the instrument: all of it just might wake people’s creativity. And that is excactly the intention of the competition Picture Music, organised by Organ Festival Holland together with Artiance.
Not only will talented organists come and show us their ability at this festival, you too can do that. Show us which creative link you can make between music and images and give it shape in the form of a picture, a drawing, photo or sculpture. Every chance it will be part of an exhibition during the festival from 9 – 17 June in the Grote Kerk.
The artworks have already started to come in and show great promise. Don’t hesitate, take part and transform the heart of Alkmaar into a spectacular art manifestation. You can find all necessary information on Picture Music on the WEBSITE.
