Joris Strijbos is een Rotterdamse kunstenaar wiens werk zich richt op de synesthetische relatie en interactie tussen bewegend beeld en geluid.
Zijn artistiek onderzoek richt zich op cybernetica, zwermintelligentie, communicatienetwerken en emergente systemen. Door middel van kinetische installaties en uitgebreide (live) cinema performances ontwikkelt hij complexe immersieve en synesthetische landschappen waarin beeld, geluid en licht continu met elkaar verweven zijn in een gesynchroniseerde choreografie. In zijn werk combineert hij kunstmatige, elektronische en digitale media met modellen en algoritmen gebaseerd op biologische systemen. In veel van de werken is de toeschouwer getuige van een proces waarin machines, computerprogramma's en de fysieke wereld met elkaar interageren. De installaties worden geprogrammeerd met behulp van algoritmen om specifieke organische structuren en 'natuurlijk' gedrag zoals zelforganisatie weer te geven, die vervolgens aan het publiek worden onthuld in de bewegingen en abstracte lichtpatronen van de machines. Soms verkennen de kunstwerken de grenzen van de menselijke visuele en auditieve waarneming en produceren ze sterke hypnotiserende patronen zoals stroboscopische lichtpulsen en geluidsgolven. In andere installaties is de ervaring meer meditatief en richt de compositie zich op choreografieën en verschuivingen van minimalistische en wiskundige objecten. Wat de stukken gemeen hebben, is hun multisensoriële aard. Licht, geluid en beweging worden met precisie samengevoegd tot tijdgebonden sculpturen.
Joris Strijbos studeerde Kunstwetenschappen aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag waar hij zijn bachelordiploma behaalde en zijn masterdiploma behaalde aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Den Haag. Joris Strijbos maakt deel uit van Macular, een collectief van kunstenaars dat onderzoek doet naar het samenspel van licht, geluid en beweging. Hun praktijk richt zich op het programmeren en manipuleren van emergente systemen en eigenschappen, evenals op de constante observatie van natuurlijke fenomenen en dynamische processen. Ze creëren grootschalige multisensorische installaties met een minimalistische esthetiek die vaak de relatie van de mens met de natuurlijke wereld aan de orde stellen.

Joris Strijbos is a Rotterdam-based artist whose work focuses on the synaesthetic relation and interaction between moving image and sound.
His artistic research focuses on cybernetics, swarm intelligence, communication networks and emergent systems. Through kinetic installations and expanded (live) cinema performances, he develops complex immersive and synesthetic landscapes in which image, sound and light are continuously intertwined in a synchronized choreography. In his work he combines artificial, electronic and digital media with models and algorithms based on biological systems. In many of the works, the viewer witnesses a process in which machines, computer programs and the physical world interact with each other. The installations are programmed using algorithms to reflect specific organic structures and "natural" behaviors such as self-organization, which are then revealed to the audience in the movements and abstract light patterns of the machines. Sometimes the artworks explore the edges of human visual and auditory perception and produce strong hypnotic patterns such as stroboscopic light pulses and sound waves. In other installations, the experience is more meditative and the composition focuses on choreographies and shifts of minimalistic and mathematical objects. What the pieces have in common is their multisensorial nature. Light, sound and movement are merged with precision into time-bound sculptures.
Joris Strijbos studied ArtScience at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague where he earned his Bachelor degree and received his master degree at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
